In the Pacific Northwest the last days of June saw the arrival of an unprecedented heat dome, part of the 2021 Western North America heat wave. Yale Climate Connections described this event as the "world’s most extreme heat wave in modern history" while The Guardian reported it exceeded "worst-case climate models".
Broken temperature records in BC became a daily occurrence with 60 falling on June 27, 59 on June 28 and 47 more on June 29. On June 30, after setting a new Canadian record of 49.6C the day before, the village of Lytton became a casualty of the heat with approximately 90% burning to the ground.
